"City Hoppers!" is the 10th episode of Season 5 of the PBS Kids show Wild Kratts. It is the 126th episode of the series overall. It premiered on June 15, 2018.

Synopsis[]

While Aviva and Koki help two Wild Kratt kids make a catapult, Chris and Martin explore the world of grasshoppers. They soon realize that these mighty jumpers were really the first catapulters and the Kratt brothers set off on a creature adventure to learn everything they can about the grasshopper's amazing jumping powers.

Plot[]

The episode begins with the Kratt brothers in a field in North America with some Wild Kratts kids looking for some grasshoppers. But, it's not easy to catch them because they're so well camouflaged which is their first line of defense. Their second line of defense, jumping kicks in they really need to escape a possible danger. A grasshopper has the capability of jumping 20 times the length of their body. The Kratt brothers then wonder what it would be like to have the powers of a grasshopper and the show transitions into the cartoon segment.

Chris and Martin Kratt are in a field trying to keep track of a red-legged grasshopper, using a tape measure to measure his jumps. Their chase leads to them tumbling down a hill right into a catapult that Aviva, Koki, Sani, and Nolan are trying to assemble. The Kratt brothers feel bad, but in their defense; the Wild Kratts kids haven't been very successful in their water balloon catapult anyway. But, the girls wisely say that failure is sometimes an important part of science and to never give up no matter how many times you fail. As for the Martin and Chris, they're eager for Aviva to program Grasshopper Powers for their Creature Power Suits, not that they need to ask of course.

Meanwhile, Gourmand is kicking back for some much-needed downtime. All of a sudden, he gets a call on his tablet from none other than Zach Varmitech. He alerts his friend about a new villain: Paisley Paver. Having her allied to the Legion of Villainous Villainhood could be essential in destroying the Wild Kratts so Zach is calling all villains including Paisley, to summit meeting at 5 o'clock. He also asks Gourmand to bring snacks which is a little last-minute. With very little time, the endangered species chef will have to come up with something fast.

Aviva has just finished programming Grasshopper Power Discs just as the Kratt brothers slip on their Creature Power Suits. They activate their new powers with the help of their new grasshopper friend. But just as the bros prepare to jump into the clouds, Chris and Martin only manage to go a couple inches before tumbling and faceplanting. It turns out that the hindlegs on the suit don't have enough power to launch the bros in the air like grasshopper legs should. This little hiccup proves Aviva's point that her inventions don't always make properly the first time. Just then, an American kestrel swoops in. This little raptor is one of many grasshopper predators and that's exactly what hopping is for: to avoid being eaten. Martin is determined to protect his little brother and insect friend so he climbs on the kestrel in an attempt to drive him away. The bird however has no interest in the grasshopper, but he may in Martin. After all, kestrels eat anything that's small enough for their talons including grasshoppers, voles, and dragonflies. And the older Kratt brother is definitely the right size so he decides to make himself scarce. But, the kestrel still pursues as he falls. Luckily, Aviva catches him before the raptor can. So to sum it up, if you're a grasshopper with legs that don't work right, you're basically a sitting duck. The only way to solve that problem is figure out how grasshopper legs work.

As for the kestrel, he finally has a grasshopper to eat and Gourmand had been spying the whole time. He now has an idea for a dish to serve at the villain summit: toffee-covered grasshoppers. And plucking them off the ground sounds like a pretty good hunting style to the evil chef.
