"Where the Bison Roam" is the 10th episode of Season 3 of the PBS Kids show Wild Kratts. It is the 76th episode of the series overall. It premiered on April 8, 2014.

In this episode, Jimmy takes the Wild Kratts team to a big patch of prairie, but after he removes the teleporter’s Activation Ring to clean it up, he trips, and the Ring falls into a herd of bison. As the Wild Kratts team works to find a way to get the Ring back, they learn about the relationship between bison and the prairie and even compare the present prairie with the prairie during the time of nineteenth-century American explorers Lewis and Clark.

Plot[]

The episode begins with a live-action segment. The Kratt brothers find a heard of American bison in the prairies. Afterward, they ask their “What if?” question, and the show transitions into the cartoon segment.

The Kratt brothers are traveling by a Buzz Bike through a field of corn, trying to find the prairie. Chris uses the journal of Lewis and Clark, American explorers who discovered the prairies way back in the early 1800s to guide them. But so far, they don't have much luck. All of a sudden, they crash onto one of the Tortuga’s leg and are knocked out cold. Aviva and Koki hear two clangs and two oofs, which are the Kratt Brothers. Koki comes to the realization that she and Aviva were searching for prairie in the exact same area as the Kratt brothers and they notice them unconscious. Koki and Aviva are baffled with how a habitat could just disappear. Aviva also explains how the prairie used to cover the whole middle of the United States; a sharp contrast to the landscape in the present. It's almost impossible to imagine how much things have changed. While the Kratt brothers are sleeping, they start dreaming about themselves being Lewis and Clark way back in the nineteenth century. To get a closer look at the nearby bison, they activate their Peregrine Falcon Creature Power Suits, and later they fly to discover the prairie, but around a minute later, they realize that the real Lewis and Clark did not have such technology, and fall in their dreams. They wake up, and realize that they dreamed they were nineteenth-century American explorers Lewis and Clark. Martin also points out that it was full of creatures back then, similar to the African savannah and beautiful. Koki shows a map of how the prairie used to cover the whole middle of North America several decades ago and now it's in small patches, and there are no more wild animals like bison, elk, grizzlies, and wolves in many prairies. Jimmy shows everyone a large patch of prairie inhabited by a herd of bison. Jimmy tries to teleport the Kratt brothers some binoculars, but the teleporter “is on the fritz”. He opens it up and pulls out a critical component called the Activation Ring, which he plans to clean, but when he tries to deliver the binoculars by hand, he trips, and accidentally drops the Ring which falls into the herd. He immediately lands the Tortuga and runs into the herd of bison to grab it. He finds it on a male bison’s horn and tries to take it, but it charges at him, and he rolls back to the Tortuga. Due to the bison’s attitude, Martin names it Raging Bull. Koki says that Raging Bull won't give the ring back if they ask him to. Jimmy back-answers Koki and says that without the ring, the teleporter is kaput. Martin and Chris run to get it, but they are stopped when a bison grunts at them. They start wondering how to get it off of him. Aviva has an idea to use the Extendo Arm to get the ring and gives it to Jimmy. However, the plan is immediately unsuccessful when he causes a stampede while trying to hover to get the ring, resulting in the Extendo Arm getting destroyed in the process. Chris then recaps that bison can be unpredictable because they can either stampede or charge if they see, hear, or feel something they don't like, such as a strange machine, meaning they need something that is suitable for their environment. Martin then gets the idea to activate Grass powers.

Chris and Martin walk through the grass after activating their Grass Creature Power Suits. They explain about the prairie grass and earth of the prairie, the bison and what their function is, and they also meet a bison calf. Martin names the bison calf Muncher, because these bison never stop eating. They also talk about what these bison do for the other animals in the prairies, since they are a keystone species to prairie. During the explanation, they immediately realize they need to Raging Ball to get the teleporter fixed. Koki eventually finds out where Chris and Martin are and is unable to track them properly because they're in the herd. They find Raging Bull after dodging some bison mouths, including his mouth, mowing down the grass and they enter a hole in the ground. Jimmy eventually finds the ring on Raging Bull's horn. However, the Kratt brothers cannot get the ring off while they're in grass mode. They need to be part of the crowd. Aviva gets to work on making a Bison Disc. While Aviva is doing that, Koki explains about three things that make a prairie a prairie and how they help. Aviva then calls the Kratt brothers and tells them to leave the hole and grab a hair sample to help her finish the bison disc. Koki then comes in the call and tells them to bring the hair sample back to the Tortuga and pick up the disc at the same time since they can't send anything. Jimmy also joins the call and reminds them they can't lose track of Raging Bull either or they will never find him again. The Kratt brothers deactivate their Creature Power Suits after a prairie dogs bites them and they ride outside with the help of a prairie dog. They run to get the bison hair from its tail. Chris climbs up Raging Bull’s tail, and he grabs some tail hair and throws it down to Martin, who heads back to the Tortuga. Chris slides down to the horns where the Activation Ring is. He tries pushing the ring off, but it is much too heavy for his size, so he decides to do some reading.

Chris falls asleep and starts dreaming about him and his brother being Lewis and Clark again. The two see how defensive the bison are when they fall down on the ground due to an earthquake and Chris gets woken up by a dust bathing Raging Bull. Chris then calls Aviva to finish the bison disc quickly, Aviva is finished just in time. She throws the disc to Martin, who activates his Creature Power Suit. Martin brags about how big and tough he is and tests the suit out, but accidentally wrecks the place. Aviva also tells Martin to get control of his bison power and says that they are graceful, rather than clumsy, although they are strong. Martin leaps six feet high which is better than before and goes out to the fields where he enters the herd and finds Raging Bull with Chris on top of him. Raging Bull challenges Martin to a head-butting contest. Chris tells Martin to knock the ring off his horn and then they're done. While fighting, Chris recalls the time he got walloped by Big Red the kickboxing kangaroo while Martin recalls the time that he got flattened by Necktie the neck-battling giraffe and he also tells Chris that it should be the latter's turn, but it's too late to switch and tells Martin to go for the ring just once, but it doesn't work. Martin tries to go for it twice. Luckily for Martin, Raging Bull is going easy on him, allowing Martin to lift the Activation Ring and Chris off of his horn. Martin and Chris immediately exit the fight and run back to the Tortuga. Jimmy cleans the Ring and places it back in the teleporter, and the Wild Kratts admire the prairie and the bison that inhabit it. Aviva asks how the prairies and bison became so rare. Koki tells Aviva that it was a combination of hunting too many bison and the prairies were getting destroyed for crops and cattle. Chris mentions that although it's smaller, it changed a lot since the time Lewis and Clark came through and says that it's still an incredible place. Jimmy fixes the teleporter and tests it out by teleporting the bison the "Thank You" cake that they made, which is successful. Martin takes a taste and finds it a little dry and then Raging Bull comes back and chases him away. Martin tells him that it all belongs to him. They conclude saying "That's bison power!".

The show transitions into the concluding live action segment. The Kratt brothers spend more time with the herd of bison on the prairie. Afterward, they conclude the episode by saying “Keep on creature adventuring; we’ll see you on the creature trail!”
